Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey. And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying: Peter, James, John, and Andrew; Philip and Thomas; Bartholomew and Matthew; James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot; and Judas the son of James. These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
Acts 1:12-14 NKJV
Where were the multitude in the upper room? Where were the people that followed Jesus? What of the crowd from Decapolis and other villages and towns? Where were the multitude that Jesus fed with five loaves of bread and two fishes? Where were they when the time came for the Holy Spirit to come upon the disciples? From this scripture, they were not there in the upper room.
The power of God will not come upon the multitude but will come upon those who gather to receive Him. A person can attend church every day, yet miss the encounter with the Lord. Being a churchgoer does not qualify one for the divine encounter. However, the power of God is reserved for those who seek a closer walk with God and remain with Him. It is going to be on the people who will patiently wait for the outpouring of the Spirit of God. Likewise, it is going to be for those people who will obey the divine instructions, as Jesus said to the disciples to wait in Jerusalem.
Additionally, the power of the Lord will not come on anyone who is just going with the crowd. It will not come on the multitude who are just going with the flow. They are blind to the reality of what God wants to do with them, instead, they are only following for what they hope to get. However, the power of God will come upon the people who will seek a relationship with God instead of the benefit. Those who will wait till He fills them up as it came on the apostles on the day of Pentecost.
Meanwhile, it’s important to note that the power didn’t come the first day the disciples were gathered. It didn’t come on the second day. It was not until the 10th day that the Spirit of God came upon them like tongues of fire. For this generation to receive an outpouring- a revival, we must wait upon the Lord. We should not just join the crowd to do the things that are trending.
Furthermore, a person who desires God to use him or her must walk circumspectly. That person must sit at the feet of Jesus to learn divine wisdom. As the scripture says in Isaiah 40:31 “…those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and faint.” It is those who will consecrate themselves and say I am here to follow Jesus all of my life.
This is the life God is inviting us into; seeking those on whom He can pour His power, equipping them for divine assignment. Will you be part of the people that will follow and not be the multitude? That even after the multitude has left you will still tarry to seek the face of the Lord.
