But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
1 John 2:20 NKJV
John sent the epistle to a group of believers facing an unsettling situation. He addressed various issues in the letter, including the warning against denying the Son in 1 John 2:18-27. In verse 18, NIV, we read: “Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” This, therefore, introduces us to the issue of what we know as believers. Let us therefore consider the place of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s knowledge.
However, verse twenty introduced a wonderful truth and a great privilege of being a child of God. “…children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:13 NIV). So, when we read “But you have an anointing…”, we know that this was not a message for the general populace, it was sent to a definite group of people.
But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name

The Holy Spirit: The Spirit of Truth
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
John 16:12-13 NIV
As a child of God, you have an anointing from the Holy One. You have been anointed and set apart for God’s purpose through the new birth. Likewise, you have been given the power to know and understand all things through the Holy Spirit that dwells in you. Every believer must realize the provision that has been made available to them through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. Let us check again from the Amplified version:
But you have an anointing from the Holy One [you have been set apart, specially gifted and prepared by the Holy Spirit], and all of you know [the truth because He teaches us, illuminates our minds, and guards us from error].
1 John 2: 20 AMP
You are no more who you used to be. You have been anointed by the Holy One, set apart for His purpose, specially gifted with gifts that money cannot buy (with divine abilities needed to carry out the purposes for which you were set apart) and prepared by the Holy Spirit – equipped so that you can excel and be victorious. The Holy Spirit is your resident teacher. He is always available to teach you everywhere.
